My Hometown - Penrith

So I was born and brought up in Manchester, and I never imagined I would end up living in The Lake District, that to me was where you went to on holiday.
But then I met and married a Cumbrian and I found myself moving up North and have never looked back.  I have made my life here, living, working and bringing my family up in the beautiful town of Penrith, known as the "Old Red Town" because of its sandstone buildings, is a town in Cumbria's Eden Valley.
This historic market town is at the heart of Cumbria, located between Scotland and England.

For you historians out there:

  • Apparently before Richard III became King, as Duke of Gloucester he was also High Sheriff of Cumberland and resided at Penrith Castle between 1471-1485
  • William Wordsworth attended the school in the Tudor House near St Andrews Church
  • Penrith's clock tower is thought to have been built in 1861

The train station is situated across from the castle, part of the West Coast Mainline, while close to the castle is Castle Park, with its own bowling club, bandstand and crazy golf

Penrith boasts a grade 1 listed church, St Andrews Church, built in local red sandstone dates from 1722.  There is a grave in the churchyard of Ewan Caesario, claimed to be an early King of Cumbria.

The famous Kendal Calling music festival is live just a few miles out of Penrith (not Kendal as the name suggests), close to Lowther castle.

The town also hosts its annual May Day bringing out thousands of locals and not so locals, to witness a coming together of town folk.  In the winter months the town hosts the famous Winter Droving procession, a magical festival which celebrates all things rural, traditional and fun.  The event highlight is the torchlight procession through the town featuring fire, lanterns, masquerade, live music and mayhem.  A spectacular not to be missed (28th October 2017).

The towns streets are full of specialist shops, cafes and restaurant's.

A perfect place to bring up a family, everything we need on our doorstep, including the glorious Lake District fells
