I was actually going to do a post on the tracks of my years, then I came across this tag by the lovely Em Linthorpe.
I am not what you would call a true music buff, although I was always to be found taping the charts in my teen years (we all did that right?!) whilst sat in my bedroom. I have memories of dancing round my bedroom making up dance routines with my friend, singing into hair brushes, thinking we were the bees knees. My tastes are diverse and random, I think that would be the most accurate definition. It wasn't difficult to pick 7 songs that impacted on my life, to be honest I could have picked loads more. So sit back and relax and don't judge!

So here goes in no particular order, songs that impacted my life:
1) (I've had) The Time of my Life - Bill Medley, Jennifer Warnes
Dirty Dancing is definitely up there with one of my all time favorite films. I am sure I know the whole script. Even now years on this song makes me feel warm and goosebumpy! Paddy McGuiness and Keith Lemon did a great job with there version the other week
2) In the Air Tonight - Phil Collins
I went to see Phil Collins live, he was awesome. A hugely talented singer, songwriter and music producer, not too mention his amazing ability to play the drums. I believe he may also have had cameo roles in the Beatles A Hard Days Night and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. In the Air Tonight, his solo debut single climbed to number 2 in the UK charts in 1981
From one great girl band to the greatest ever boy band (in my opinion), Take That. Well this was a tough one to pick, partly because they had so many fantastic hits. Relight My Fire with guest vocals from Lulu, I thought I was awesome when at the top of my voice (probably not tuneful) I would be singing "you got to be strong enough to walk on through the night......", in true Lulu style (into my hairbrush of course).
I couldn't not pick at least one Madonna song. I loved her, that's all I need to say
This song signals my now husbands influence. We have totally different music tastes, however The Housemartins and Beautiful South are definitely what we have in common. Released in Nov 1986, this a cappella style hit reached number one in Dec 1986
So last but not least, and a difficult choice finally is Relax, Frankie Goes to Hollywood's debut single in 1983. It was this or The Power of Love, both fantastic!
Oh go on then one more, only because I have just download this on itunes
Classic cover by Mick Hucknall and his tribe, winning Best R&B Song of 1989. The mellow voices and subtleness makes the hairs on my arms stand on end
Thanks for listening. It wasn't that difficult, in fact there were several on my list didn't make it:
3) Mama - Spice Girls
I struggled to pick a Spice Girls song, I loved them all and would sit and listen to their songs over and over. It was between Wannabe or Mama, and as you can see Mama it was. A beautiful ballard with some beautiful harmonies
4) Relight My Fire - Take That
5) Borderline - Madonna
6) Caravan of Love - The Housemartins
7) Relax - Frankie Goes to Hollywood
If You Don't Know Me By Know - Simply Red
- The Harder I Try - Brother Beyond
- Rotterdam - Beautiful South
- When Will I be Famous - Bros
Why don't you have a go and see if you can pick 7 (or maybe 8) soundtracks of your life and give Not Just a mum from Cumbria a mention
Thanks for listening
With music love

Great list...some absolute classics here! You'll be very happy with our celebrity follower on Instagram then? Haha! You've picked my favourite Take That song and one of my fave Madonna ones too...slthough I do have a soft spot for the Dick Tracy soundtrack too. Thanks so much for taking part, I will link up your post to mine today x Em Linthorpe
ReplyDeleteYou were right to nominate eight tracks, because that's how many the celebrity interviewees are asked to nominate on Desert Island Discs. Here is my selection:
ReplyDeleteThe Beatles — I Am the Walrus.
Jimi Hendrix Experience — All Along the Watchtower.
The Grateful Dead — Uncle John's Band.
Solomon Burke — Everybody Needs Somebody to Love.
Pink Floyd — Atom Heart Mother.
Dire Straits — Sultans of Swing.
Queen — Bohemian Rhapsody.
Led Zeppelin — Rock and Roll.
I compiled a similar list a few years ago, but it included tracks that triggered specific memories and was not a list of favourite tracks.
Incidentally, I'm a native of Penrith, although nowadays I'm in town only during the summer months.
